Secondary Infertility

Secondary infertility is a condition where a couple has difficulty getting pregnant although they already have at least one child together. This problem is common with about 1 million couples in the United States experiencing this problem. This problem causes emotional difficulties and can be a source of other problems between couples. This is a very difficult problem and sometimes cannot be solved even by the best fertility specialists. There are cases wherein the cause is unknown and both members of the couple are very healthy.

Causes of Secondary Infertility
The causes of secondary infertility are mostly similar to the causes of primary infertility. The source of infertility can be problems with the reproductive system of one or both members of the couple. Sometimes even with extensive medical procedures, the exact cause of this problem cannot be identified. The most frequent cause of this kind of infertility is related to ovulation problems of the female. The menstrual cycle can change for no apparent reason but sometimes pregnancy and childbirth can make this happen. This makes fertilization very hard.

Tumors in the uterus are also known to cause this problem. The tumors can get in the way of the menstrual cycle of the woman and significantly decrease fertility. Sometimes, abnormal cells grow near the uterus and can disrupt the reproductive cycle and lower fertility. This is called endometriosis and is normally asymptomatic and can only be diagnosed by a physician.

Another common cause of secondary infertility is obesity or a big increase in the weight of a man or woman. Overweight and obese people have many health problems and one of them is low fertility. An infection in the part of the male or female can also cause fertility problems especially when the infection affects the reproductive system.

Ageing usually decreases fertility because as people get older, the quality of the sperm or egg significantly gets lower. Some of the other causes are still unknown.

Solutions
If you are experiencing this problem, there’s a very good chance to find a resolution. Before consulting with a specialist you can try some home remedies first.

The most important thing to do when trying to conceive is to take note of your menstrual cycle and determine when you’re ovulating. This is the ideal time for intercourse when the chance of impregnation is highest. Fertility monitors and ovulation prediction kits are available if you have a hard time determining your ovulation period.

Healthy lifestyle changes can also increase fertility. Smoking and binge drinking can cause infertility. Healthy people tend to have lesser fertility problems. If you’re in your late thirties or have been trying for a long time to get pregnant, it is best to consult a fertility expert. The expert can find the exact cause and give you the necessary solution/treatment that will help you conceive.
